About us
The Eleanor Foundation (EF) was created in 2012 following the death of Eleanor Carey who was killed in a collision whilst cycling in London in December 2011. She was studying International Development and was committed to becoming a development professional with a specific interest in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).
EF is active in north west Tanzania in Chato District, Geita Region and Biharamulo District, Kagera Region. These two districts are approximately 10,500 square kms in area with a combined population of 1.04 million (2022 census). Principally, EF works in partnership with local communities and the two District Governments to improve access to improved water sources, to construct toilets at both primary and secondary schools and to promote better hygiene largely through handwashing initiatives. EF has also been involved in the construction of new health facilities in remote rural locations.
Additionally, EF collects unwanted bicycles in Guernsey for shipment via the UK based organisation, Re-Cycle, for distribution to partners in a number of countries in Africa. In Africa, bicycles change lives.
