Les Bourgs Hospice LBG

About us

Les Bourgs Hospice is celebrating 35 years of providing free, specialist palliative care to our Bailiwick Community in 2026 for anyone living with a life limiting illness, as well as providing support to their family members.  The charity was established in 1991 by our founds Greville Mitchell OBE and his wife Lisa Mitchell in memory of their son Andrew.

We are the only hospice in the Bailiwick, supporting a population of over 67,000 and in 2025 we had an age range of patients from 26 to 105.  Our care is to support a wide variety of life limiting illnesses - not just cancer.  This includes neurological illnesses like Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone plus heart, renal and lung failure.  In contrast to hospices in the UK and Jersey we do not receive any Government funding so have to rely on our community, grant givers, trusts, foundations and income streams from our charity shop, fundraising and legacy giving to be able to deliver our care.  Our running costs for 2026 are £2.8m.

We have a team of specialist nurses and health care assistants who not only provide end of life care but also complex respite, pain management and symptom control, bereavement support and a wellbeing service.  Les Bourgs Hospice provides all of this care at a purpose-built building which has 7 inpatient rooms, large social areas, therapy rooms and a beautiful garden.

Our Wellbeing Service runs a structured 12-week programme which aims to help people with a life-limiting illness to stay independent, improve their quality of life, reduce any fear about hospice care and build social connections.  Our bereavement service not only supports people with grief when someone has died but also with anticipatory grief which may be when someone receives a terminal diagnosis and all of their hopes and dreams for their future life change.

Our key cost area is funding the delivery of our care (83%) with the largest expense in that area being care team salaries.  They are at the heart of everything that we do and we could not deliver the exceptional level of compassionate care that we do without them.
