My name is Rory, and I’m 13. Earlier this year, I lost my stepdad to cancer. He spent his final two weeks at Les Bourgs Hospice, and they made those days as peaceful and special as they could be. I’ve already lost one dad — my biological dad passed away from cancer when I was only 16 months old — so losing another father figure has been really hard. But the people at Les Bourgs helped make everything a little less frightening.
When my stepdad first arrived, the hospice didn’t feel like a sad place. They helped us have little parties when friends and family came to visit. There was laughter, stories, and moments I’ll always remember. In the second week, when he got worse, the staff were incredible. They made sure he was comfortable, calm, and treated with so much respect. They also looked after me, my mum, and the rest of our family. They checked on us, talked to us, and made sure we never felt alone.
Because of everything they did for us, I wanted to do something to give back. That’s why I’ve set myself a huge challenge — something way outside my comfort zone. For 30 days in a row, from 5th August to 3rd September, I’m going to complete a triathlon every single day: 3 km of cycling, 2 km of running, and 1 km of swimming.
I’m not athletic. I don’t do any of these sports normally. So this is going to be really tough for me — physically and mentally. But I want to push myself because the hospice pushed themselves for us. They gave my stepdad dignity and love right until the end, and they supported my whole family when we needed it most. This challenge is my way of saying thank you.
Every donation helps Les Bourgs Hospice continue their amazing work. It means other families going through the hardest moments of their lives can have the same kindness, care, and support we had.
